Tom Ogburn became Senior Pastor for Westwood Baptist Church on September 30, 2018. Before coming to Westwood Tom served as pastor for congregations in Knoxville, Tennessee and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Tom also spent a decade as a missionary and as a part of the missions staff for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Tom is a graduate of Campbell University (B.S.), Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University (D.Min.). Tom shares a history with Westwood, serving as its church planter and first pastor, however he is more excited about the future he and the church have together in ministry.
Tom has been married to Beth for over 30 years and remains thrilled that she said “yes” those many years ago. They are grateful for their family. They have a son, Aaron. He and his wife, Grace, serve as missionaries with Pioneer Bible Translators. They also have a daughter, Elizabeth, who along with her husband, Jackson Henry, live and work in Texas. Beth is an ordained minister and works for Elite Management Company.
Tom is trying to grow his skills in the kitchen and has discovered a love for fly-fishing. He has a passion for books and a love for history. He also has a ridiculously large collection of elephants from across the globe. Tom and Beth enjoy spending time with people, hearing their life story.
Associate Pastor for Music and Worship
Derrick Arellano recently joined Westwood as the Associate Pastor of Music and Worship in August of 2020. Derrick and his family moved here from Lorena, a suburb just south of Waco,TX. Together they are enjoying the beauty of the area and discovering daily how warm the people are here in the Triangle.
Derrick was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. He still goes back from time to time to visit his parents. After graduation he went on to study engineering and Texas A&M for two years and then transferred to Baylor University to pursue his passion for music.
The love of his life is Brooke. They met in college as dance partners in a show choir called “Showtime!” at Baylor University and have been dance partners ever since. Confident in the future God had planned for them, Derrick proposed to Brooke the night of Y2K on the San Antonio riverwalk. She accepted and they celebrated as fireworks exploded around them. They were married just months later with a multitude of family and friends in attendance on a beach under a gazebo in Cancún, Mexico in the fall of 2000.
They are so grateful to God for their two children, Anson and Alayna. Anson is a student at Texas A&M University pursuing a degree in kinesiology and sports science and works for Texas A&M Athletics in support of the football team. He has plans to pursue graduate studies and a career in physical therapy. Alayna attends Apex High School. She enjoys musical theater, volleyball, music, and spending time with friends. She aspires to study veterinary medicine and follow her brother to study at Texas A&M.
Derrick graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music in Applied Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance studies. Prior to coming to Westwood, Derrick served church music ministries in Lewisville, Hillsboro, and Lorena,TX. He answered a call to ministry 2010 and has been serving the Lord with gladness ever since. Prior to ministry, Derrick worked as a sales manager, corporate trainer, and marketing manager in Dallas,TX.
Derrick has sung and travelled with choirs all his life and also enjoys singing in quartets and small ensembles with family and friends. He enjoys playing and watching sports of all kinds but especially enjoys playing basketball, volleyball, and disc golf. Derrick and Brooke enjoy leading in worship and enjoy sharing time and talent in ministry together.

Westwood is committed to ministry with children, youth, and their families. We are engaged in an active discovery and discernment process as a part of identifying the best possible staffing structure for this ministry. In the interim, our church staff have embraced specific responsibilities to provide support for these vital ministry expressions.
Matt and Taylor Miskel
Interim Youth Ministers
About Matt and Taylor
Matt and Taylor Miskel joined Westwood as the Interim Youth Ministers on February 1st, 2022. Matt and Taylor moved to North Carolina from Littleton, CO, just south of Denver.
Outside of Westwood, Matt is a 7th grade science teacher and Taylor is a hospital chaplain. When not working, they enjoy being outdoors in nature, exploring new places through traveling, and being active through various sports.
Interim Children’s Minister
Amanda Allard joined Westwood as the Interim for Children’s Ministry on October 1st, 2021. Amanda has worked with Westwood for a little over two years now, starting as an intern for Children’s Ministry and helping out briefly as the interim of Children’s Ministry as needed and helping where needed as the Family Ministries Intern.
Born and raised in the Raleigh area, Amanda has been a part of the Westwood Family her whole life. Her best memories growing up involve being at Westwood during her time as a youth. She graduated in December of 2020 from Campbell University with a BS in Elementary Education and is currently enrolled in Campbell’s Divinity School to obtain her Masters in Divinity with a concentration in Christian Education. She is also currently teaching Fourth Grade for an Elementary school in Cary, NC.
Some of the things Amanda enjoys most during her free time would be working out, reading, going to the beach, and especially loves going to and enjoy all things Disney-related.
Charles is from Wilmington, North Carolina where he graduated from New Hanover High. He holds degrees from Mars Hill College, Furman University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He and his wife Gloria served as Missionaries to Brazil for 14 years. Rev. Allard served as Pastor at Westwood from 1995 to 2008. He led the church through two building campaigns and shepherded Westwood through its greatest season of growth. He has had a lasting impact on the life and ministry of the church. In addition to Westwood, Rev. Allard has held North Carolina Pastorates in Bailey, Salisbury, Boone, and Morehead City, and interim positions in Wallace and Clinton. He and Gloria have 3 grown children and 4 Grandchildren. The Allards live in Apex, NC.
Jennifer Watkins joined the Westwood Baptist staff as Secretary/Receptionist in April 2015. She lives in Willow Spring with her two children Johnathan and Jenna.
Jennifer is also a preacher’s daughter. Her deceased father, Rev. John Shelton, died in 1995 while serving as pastor of Inwood Baptist in Raleigh. Also, Jennifer’s 10-year-old daughter is a cancer survivor of 8 years. She was diagnosed at age 1 with Neuroblastoma, but praise God Jenna has been cancer free for 8 years. Jennifer attends The Summit Church of Garner. Jennifer enjoys staying active with working out and running and loves being outdoors and especially at the beach.
Marilyn has a passion and love of gospel and church music and serving the Lord playing the organ. She felt the call of serving the Lord in this capacity at a young age and has been serving for many years.
She has served in various churches in the music ministry and has been blessed by the opportunities to serve and play the organ. She and her husband Chris have been a part of Westwood Baptist Church since January 2019.
Irem joined the Westwood community in March, following her move back to Raleigh from Asheville. She holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Carolina University.
Before Westwood, she served in churches as music director and accompanist in Asheville and Greenville.
When Anna became Hostess for Westwood Baptist Church it was a calling for her. She joined the staff in 2006 and has found it a joy to serve this church family.
Anna has been married to John since 1993. Together they share 7 children, 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren . Anna has been a part of Westwood since 1991. She boldly proclaims; “it’s the best loving church ever”. When asked about her role at the church she shares, “It is the love of my heart to cook and see how God works it out. I love to see people eat and enjoy eating.”
